DICKSON, Tenn. -- The Eastern Illinois men's golf squad captured a ninth place finish at the end-of-season Ohio Valley Conference championship on Wednesday as sophomore
Gino Parrodi led all Panthers.
The sophomore began the day tied for fifth but fell a few spots in the final round by adding two more strokes to his three day total of 221 (73-73-75), which ended up tying for ninth place at five-over at the par 72, 6,049 yard meet which was held at the Grey Stone Golf Club.
His ninth place finish bested his previous standing during his freshman season in 2009, when he tied for 24th place, along with two other Panther players, and also earned OVC All-Newcomer honors.
The remaining Panther competitors failed to place in the Top 25, as senior
Matt Bird ended his EIU career in 32nd place (228), followed by
Francisco Cherizola in 36th place (231).
David Lawrence and
Kevin Flack would finish in 40th (234) and 41st (235), respectively.
The disappointing ninth place team finish by the Eastern squad fell short of last season's seventh place honor.
Murray State pulled way ahead to earn the team title and automatic berth to the NCAA meet via a 865 total and led by individual winner Nick Newcomb. Murray State ended up 18 strokes ahead of second place Morehead State, while Jacksonville State (3rd), Eastern Kentucky (T-4th) and Tennessee State (T-4th) comprised the Top 5 squads.
Tennessee Tech (6th), Austin Peay (7th), and UT Martin (8th) ended just ahead of the Panthers in the final team standings.
Eight of the current ten players return for the Panthers next season, with
Matt Bird and
Lucas Mannix the two lone seniors on the squad.
