Complete OVC Release & Honorees
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – A league-high five Eastern Illinois athletic teams were the recipients of the Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Awards and 28 EIU student-athletes were also recognized for their 4.0 grade point averages with OVC Medals of Honor.
The Ohio Valley Conference released its annual academic awards and Commissioner's Honor Roll Thursday (July 22). EIU women's basketball, football, men's golf, women's soccer and men's track and field were winners of the Team Academic Achievement Awards for having the highest percentage of their student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll among their respective sports around the conference. Women's basketball won the award for the fifth consecutive year.
As an athletic department, Eastern finished third behind Morehead State and SIU Edwardsville in the OVC Institutional Academic Achievement. The award is presented annually to the OVC school with the highest percentage of its total student-athletes on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll for that academic year. One-hundred and sixty-five EIU student-athletes were recognized as Honor Roll students during the 2009-10 academic year for their GPAs 3.25 and above.
Eleven EIU programs had at least one OVC Medal of Honor winner, with softball and women's track leading the way with five each. Those student-athletes are recognized for posting the highest GPA (4.0) in their OVC-sponsored sports.
