 ACADEMIC STUDY HOURS

A quiet monitored study session is held for two hours each evening, Monday through Thursday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m in the PASS Academic Center. During the day the PASS Academic Center is open during normal business hours 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. - Monday through Friday.

Student-athletes can study in the PASS Academic Center during any of the times listed above and a member of the PASS will be on duty during those hours. Continuing student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or below are required by PASS to attend for a minimum of two-to-six hours per week.

All incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes are also required to attend for a minimum of four to six hours per week. Students are allowed to complete study hour obligations by attending supervised study sessions or working with tutors in the PASS Academic Center, or by working with instructors or tutors in the academic departments.

Coaches will receive reports (every Friday) on their student-athletes attendance for that week’s academic study hours.

Additionally, most sports at EIU also hold study hours on the road when a team is going to be traveling for an extended period of time for competition.

 ACADEMIC MONITORING

Academic performance is monitored both formally and informally by the academic services staff. Attendance, effort and course grades are monitored.

Every student-athletes’ grades are checked twice a semeter. Coaches receive a copy of the monitoring reports and meet with student-athletes to discuss their academic progress.

Academic Services encourages student-athletes to bring academic concerns to the attention of a staff member as soon as possible.

 TUTORING SERVICES

There are a variety of academic tutors available through the academic departments on campus. Individual or group tutors will be obtained as necessary. Tutoring services are free of charge to EIU student-athletes.

INDIVIDUALIZED PRIORITY REGISTRATION

Panther student-athletes receive priority registration within their EIU academic unit or major. It is important to be advised early and register at the earliest possible date to ensure enrollment in the proper classes.

 COUNSELING & MENTORING

Members of the Academic Services Office staff meet wtih individual student-athletes on a variety of academic, athletic, career and personal issues. Time is also spent helping individuals improve time management, study skills, and assignment preparation. When necessary and appropriate, student-athletes are referred to specialized resources and services, both on and off campus.

COMMUNITY SERVICE -- ‘EXTEND-A-PAW’

Student-athletes are encouraged to participate in the Panther ‘Extend-A-Paw" program... a program designed to provide community service opportunities to the Charleston area. Projects include reading books to children in schools, conducting food drives, involvement in nursing homes, helping with Habitat for Humanity and many other projects. Volunteer placements can be arranged by the Director or Assistant Director of Academic Services for student-athletes. Projects have been conducted by individual athletes, individuals teams and as SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) functions.
