Members of the EIU baseball team read to Mrs. Van Meter’s first grade class (Carl Sandburg elementary) on January 29, 2008. Tyler Brandon, Ross Jeske, Richie Derbak, Mike Hoekstra, and Mike Recchia read books that were chosen by the elementary students. Reading to elementary school children is part of EIU Athletic Department's “Extend-a-Paw” volunteer program. This program provides volunteer activities for EIU’s student-athletes.

Women’s soccer and women’s basketball student-athletes and Donald Thomas, senior football standout, assisted with Mark Twain’s Holly Day breakfast on Saturday, December 1. Panther athletes volunteered their time early Saturday morning to help with the annual fundraiser. The athletes helped students shop for presents for family members, helped with wrapping the gifts, and assisted in the lunchroom with cooking and cleanup.
