CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's soccer hits the road Tuesday for the first time this fall, traveling to Indianapolis for an exhibition friendly at Butler.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (CDT) at the Butler Bowl. Butler visited Charleston for an exhibition friendly a year ago and the two teams also squared off in a 2008 regular-season game in Indianapolis.
Eastern was a 1-0 winner against Butler in 2009, with
Jerry Maddi scoring the game's only goal in the 57th minute. Despite not counting towards EIU's final record, it turned out to be one of the more impressive victories of the 2009 campaign. The Bulldogs went on to win the Horizon League regular-season title and earn a national seed (12) in the NCAA Tournament. Butler finished its season with a 14-3-2 record and a plus-17 goal differential.
Each of the Panthers' final two exhibition games are against Horizon League teams that qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Saturday, EIU hosts Green Bay, which won the Horizon League Tournament after beating Butler in a shootout in the tourney championship game. Green Bay was among the five teams nationally receiving votes in NSCAA preseason coaches' poll.
Butler won its exhibition opener at Dayton Saturday, 2-0. The Bulldogs lost 2009 top scorer Boris Gatzky (7 goals, 7 assists), but welcomed back Horizon League Newcomer of the Year Julian Cardona (6 goals, 4 game-winners) and Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year Matt Hedges.
