Ta’Kenya Nixon from women’s basketball and Treysen Vavra from baseball have been named the EIU student-athletes of the week.
Nixon led the women’s basketball team to its first postseason victory in school history, 60-58, over Missouri in the WNIT on March 20. The senior guard scored a season-high 27 points on 13-for-17 shooting with five assists, four steals and three rebounds. She also became the school’s all-time leading scorer in the win, surpassing Rachel Galligan (2006-09). Nixon now has 1,907 career points.
Vavra led the baseball team to a 3-1 record last week, including the series win at Illinois State on March 22-23. The junior infielder posted a .375 batting average (6-for-16) with three doubles, two runs and seven RBI. He also had a .563 slugging percentage and hit .600 (3-for-5) with runners in scoring position.
