CHARLESTON, Ill. – #Zye Boey# of the men’s track team and #Rachel Galligan# of the women’s basketball team were named the Eastern Illinois student-athletes of the month for February 2009. Each month during the school year one male and one female student-athlete are recognized for their outstanding performance in their sport.

Boey, a redshirt freshman sprinter from Decatur, Ill., was outstanding during the month of February earning OVC Athlete of the Year and OVC Freshman of the Year becoming the first freshman to win the OVC top athlete honor. He won the 60m and 200m dash at the OVC Championships setting the meet record with a time of 6.67 in the 60m dash. He was named the OVC male of the championships and is currently ranked in the Top 10 nationally in both sprint events.

Galligan, a senior post player from Bloomington, Ill., was pivotal in the Panthers securing the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball tournament. She was named the player of the week in the league one time and on Feb. 28 at Tennessee State passed Nancy Kassebaum as the Panthers career leading scorer with 1,817 points. Galligan also ranks as the EIU career leader in blocked shots and free throws.
