Oct. 14, 1978 - Eastern Illinois dominated the Mid-Continent Conference cross country championships in the first year of the league's existence as three runners finished one, two, three in the championship event.

Larry Schuldt, John McInerney and Reo Rorem placed in the top three spots at the championship held on the Eastern Illinois campus competing at a 5-mile distance.  EIU scored 17 points to win the meet with Northern Iowa placing second with 54 points as EIU placed in six of the top seven spots.  Akron, Western Illinois, Youngstown State and Northern Michigan rounded out the field.

EIU would go on to win the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional that season and place fifth in the nation.
