CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Austin Peay freshman standout Tatiana Ariza's sixth goal of the season was the lone score of the game as the Lady Govs defeated Eastern Illinois women's soccer, 1-0, in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.
Ariza scored in the 29th minute, APSU's first-ever goal against the Panthers (3-6-1, 0-1 OVC) in nine all-time meetings. Leading the OVC with nine overall wins this season, the Lady Govs (9-2, 1-0 OVC) also posted their first victory against EIU. Entering the night, the Panthers led the all-time series 6-0-2.
Eastern goalkeeper Kaylin Lorbert finished with six saves, highlighted by stopping a penalty kick chance for Natalia Ariza in the 51st minute. The Panthers were credited with only two shots on goal among their five shots. Austin Peay challenged Lorbert with seven of its 15 shots.
Eastern's struggles on the road continued. The Panthers are now winless in their last nine (0-7-2) games away from Charleston dating back to last season. Friday night's contest was game No. 3 of EIU's season-long road stretch, which continues with Sunday's game at Jacksonville State.
Hillary Blake, Jessica Blake and Erika Prazma went the distance among the EIU field players. Lauren Hoppensteadt logged 43 minutes to lead the reserves. Austin Peay only used one substitute.
Sunday's game at Jax State is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
