MEMPHIS, Tenn. – RHP
Mike Hoekstra threw a complete game and only allowed one run to lead Eastern Illinois over Memphis, 3-1, on Friday night at FedExPark.
The Panthers (2-11) jumped on the scoreboard early as
Zach Borenstein scored on a #T.J. McManus# sacrifice fly to right field in the first inning, giving EIU the early 1-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, the Tigers (10-5) tied the game at one on a Robby Graham RBI single to center field.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, EIU was able to score two more runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Tigers.
Cam Strang hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the first run before a McManus RBI single to first base scored the second run.
Hoekstra (2-2) recorded the win, striking out five batters and walking none. The Lansing, Ill., native surrendered seven hits.
“The story of the night has to be the phenomenal performance of
Mike Hoekstra,” said Eastern Illinois head coach
Jim Schmitz. “He didn't walk anyone and that was huge.”
Dan Langfield (2-1) took the loss, striking out nine EIU batters and allowing five hits.
The Tigers collected two more hits (7-5) than the Panthers, but Memphis did commit three errors in the contest.
“It was an ugly win,” said Schmitz. “All three runs were scored by doing the little things like sacrifice flies and sacrifice bunts. We really put the ball in play and put pressure on the Memphis defense.”
The second game of the weekend series with Memphis is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
