JACKSON, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois baseball players
Zach Borenstein and
Luke Bushur earned All-Ohio Valley Conference Honors on Tuesday night. Borenstein earned first team honors while Bushur was named to the all-freshman team.
Borenstein becomes the first position player to be named to the all-conference first team since Jordan Kreke and Jordan Tokarz earned the honors in 2009.
Mike Recchia earned first-team accolades last season as a starting pitcher. This marks the second time in Borenstein's career that he has earned all-conference honors as the outfielder was named to the all-freshman squad in 2009.
The Buffalo Grove, Ill., native led the Panther offense this season with a team-high .349 batting average, 38 runs and 68 hits. The outfielder also added 13 doubles, seven homes runs and 29 RBIs in addition to posting a .554 slugging percentage and a .419 on base percentage. Borenstein was also 9-for-14 in stolen bases.
During OVC action, Borenstein hit .400 with 21 RBIs and 23 runs. The outfielder posted a .738 slugging percentage and a .468 on base percentage in those games.
Bushur becomes the sixth freshman in EIU history to be named to the all-freshman team. The Panthers have had a player on the team every year since the all-freshman squad was established in 2006.
The right-handed pitcher was the No. 2 pitcher in EIU's weekend rotation this season, making 15 appearances with 13 starts in 56.2 innings. The Teutopolis, Ill., native posted a 4-5 record with a 6.04 ERA on the year with the second most strikeouts on the team with 49, trailing team-leader
Mike Hoekstra by one strikeout.
During OVC action, Bushur posted a 3-2 record with 31 strikeouts to only 12 walks in 33.1 innings of work.
Southeast Missouri State's Trenton Moses was named the OVC Player of the Year and Austin Peay's Jeremy Dobbs was tabbed the OVC Pitcher of the Year. Eastern Kentucky's Bryan Soloman was named Rookie of the Year while Austin Peay's Gary McClure took home OVC Coach of the Year honors.
