WATERLOO, Iowa – Northern Iowa's Ashley Sill found the back of the net only 54 seconds into the contest to defeat the Eastern Illinois women's soccer team, 1-0, in the season opener for both squads.

Ashley Sill connected on what would be the lone goal of the match off a corner kick by UNI teammate Melissa Hagan.

“We had a lack of focus in the first few minutes of the match,” said Eastern Illinois head coach Summer Perala. “We had a miss communication and poor positioning on their corner kick and couldn't clear it. We came out big in the second half and took control of the game in my opinion, but we unable to score a goal to tie the match.”

The Panthers (0-1) took four shots in the contest including two on goal. Freshman Meagan Radloff paced the EIU offense with two shots (one on goal). Ashley Streid and Ashley Eck both took a shot in the match.

UNI took six shots including three shots on goal in the match, led by Ashley Sill's two shots (one on goal). EIU committed eight fouls to UNI's seven and had eight less corner kicks (11-3).

Jessica Taldone took the loss between the pipes for the Panthers, allowing one goal and making two saves. Lauren Potzman made two saves and posted the shutout for UNI.

Sam Balek, Hillary Blake, Jessica Blake and Erika Prazma played the entire match for the Panthers while newcomers Madison Carter, Kelsie Friend, Lauren Momberger, Radloff, Jade Schwarting and Brooke Sill all saw action in their first collegiate soccer match.

The Panthers return to action at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21 at Missouri.
