NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Illinois women's soccer team fell, 1-0, at Belmont on Friday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park. The Panthers drop to 0-3 on the year.
The Bruins (2-1) returned the favor from last season's loss to the Panthers (0-3) by scoring the match's lone goal via a penalty kick. EIU defeated Belmont last year in the first meeting between the two schools on a penalty kick by
Kristin Germann in the closing minutes.
Belmont's Morgan McBride netted her first goal of the season when she found the back of the net in the ninth minute of the match. It would be the only goal of the evening for either squad.
The Bruins took one more shot (7-6) in the match and one more shot on goal (4-3) than the Panthers.
Ashley Streid paced the Panthers with four shots, including two on goal. Germann added a shot in the match while freshman
Meagan Radloff had a shot on goal. Taylor Smith led the Bruins with two shots.
Both squads took four corner kicks in the match. Belmont also committed three more fouls (11-8) than EIU.
EIU used both goalkeepers in the match with
Brittany O'Dell making her first career start with the Panthers. The Charleston, Ill., native made one save and allowed one goal in 45 minutes of action.
Jessica Taldone made two saves, playing and starting in the second half.
“We told both girls whoever had a better week of practice was going to start at Belmont,” said Eastern Illinois head coach Summer Perala on starting O'Dell. “It's hard to stop a penalty kick, but she played well. Jessica (Taldone) came in the second half and also did a good job.”
Belmont's Nicole Berner made three saves and posted her first shutout of the season between the pipes.
The Panthers return to action at IUPUI on Sept. 2.
