TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Eastern Illinois volleyball ended Saturday play at the two-day Indiana State Classic with wins over both Chicago State and Coppin State. The two match sweep helped the Panthers earn third place honors and even their record to 2-2 on the early season.
EIU hit past the Cougars in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) and then needed four frames to down the Eagles (25-17, 25-14, 19-25, 25-15).
Eastern now owns a 10-0 advantage in the all-time series versus Chicago State, while meeting Coppin State for the first time.
In the first match of the day,
Emily Franklin and
Amy Martin paced the offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively as both performances marked new career-highs.
Freshman Kirby Katie, who earned a well-deserved spot on the all-tournament team, continued to impress in her first weekend of play as a Panther, as she added eight kills and two aces, while classmate
Kelsey Roggemann was close behind with seven put-a-ways of her own.
Senior setter
Chrissie Albers dished out 36 assists off the 39 total Panther kills and added seven digs and two aces as Eastern won the service game via a seven-to-three ace advantage.
Defensively, Roggemann stuffed four Cougar (0-3) attacks at the net, while Arnold and Kirby each added two blocks apiece. Senior libero
Brittany Wallace led with 17 digs. Team-wise, both EIU and CSU connected on seven blocks, while the Panthers held a 48-to-39 dig lead.
Against Coppin State (1-2), EIU won two sets before the Eagles countered with a third set win. But Eastern picked up the victory with the fourth frame win.
Kirby led the Panthers in the second contest with 12 kills off a .300 attack, and added a team-high two aces.
Martin matched her kill total from the first game today with 10 more versus the Eagles, and also registered four blocks. Albers continued to run the offense in fine form as she dished 41 assists.
In defensive stats, Arnold came one block shy of tying her career-high of eight, as she tallied two solo stuffs and assisted on five more. Wallace led the back row defense with 16 digs.
The Panthers will now begin preparation for next weekend's two-day Louisville Invitational, as EIU will face the host squad as well as Wichita State and Ole Miss.
