INDIANAPOLIS – The Eastern Illinois women's soccer team tied IUPUI, 2-2, after playing two overtime periods on Friday night at Kuntz Stadium. EIU moves to 4-0-1 all-time against the Jaguars.
Both teams nearly scored in overtime with shots that just missed the back of the net. IUPUI's Megan Hoch, the Summit League's Offensive Player of the Week, took a shot in the 91st minute that EIU's
Jessica Taldone made a diving save to stop. In the 94th minute, redshirt-junior Ashley Stried took a shot on ball played through the defense that went only a few feet left of the goal.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Panthers (0-3-1) fought back and netted two goals into the first ten minutes of the second period to tie the match.
Lauren Hoppensteadt scored the first goal in the 46th minute – her first collegiate goal – off a rebound shot by teammate
Kristin Germann. Nine minutes later, Germann scored a balled played through the middle by Streid from 25 yards out to net the equalizer.
The Jaguars (1-3-1) got on the scoreboard first in the 30th minute when Taylor Heidorn beat EIU goalkeeper
Brittany O'Dell to a ball played to the top of the box, knocking in the match's first goal from 18 yards out. IUPUI made the score 2-0 in the 37th minute when Chelsi McHenry hit a shot to the left post from Heidorn.
IUPUI tallied 17 shots (eight on goal) in the match to EIU's 11 (six on goal). Both teams took one corner kick in the match. The Panthers committed 13 fouls in the match while IUPUI had nine.
Germann paced the Panthers with three shots including two on goal. IUPUI's McHeny had three shots on goal in the contest to lead the Jaguars.
Taldone played the final 65 minutes in goal for EIU, making two saves.
Brittany O'Dell made four saves in the first half and allowed two goals. IUPUI's Kristin Haseley made four saves and allowed two goals in 110 minutes between the pipes.
The Panthers play host to Butler in their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
