CARBONDALE, Ill. – Six pitchers combined to only surrender one run, leading the Panther baseball team to a 5-1 win over in-state foe Southern Illinois on Tuesday afternoon at Abe Martin Field.
“Pitching was outstanding again today,” said Eastern Illinois head coach
Jim Schmitz. “It was a business-type win today. We knew coming into the game that they didn't field the ball well so we put some pressure them and they committed four errors.
“
Matt Borens was exciting to watch today. He had good stuff and it was great to see him work us out of a bases loaded jam. Defensively,
Tyler Schweigert and
Ryan Dineen made some great plays.”
In the top of the first inning, the Panthers took a 1-0 advantage on a
Ryan Dineen RBI ground out to score
Nick Priessman. EIU pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by
Jacob Reese and
T.J. McManus.
A Jordan Sivertsen RBI double down the left-field line in the bottom of the fourth got the Salukis within two (3-1) before the Panthers scored two runs in the seventh inning to make the score 5-1.
Both teams posted seven hits in the contest. The Salukis committed four errors in the game to zero miscues by the Panthers while SIU left three more runners on base (9-6) in the loss.
Priessman led the Panther offense, going 1-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. McManus also went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Schweigert added two runs.
Troy Barton (3-1) picked up the win for EIU, striking out two and allowing one hit in two innings of work. Six pitchers saw action in the predetermined rotation for the day, combining for seven strikeouts and three walks.
Peter Slavonic (1-1) took the loss for SIU, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) in six innings. Chris Serritella led the Salukis at the plate as he was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
The Panthers return to action on March 23-25 when they open Ohio Valley Conference action at SIU Edwardsville. Game one of the three game series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23.
