WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Panther women's soccer team fell in double overtime, 2-1, at Purdue on Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex. EIU drops to 0-2 on the year.
The match remained scoreless until the 68
th minute when Taylor Niewoit put Purdue (2-0) on the scoreboard first. Niewoit scored from the top of the six-yard box on an assist from Hadley Stuart and Jordan Frick.
EIU responded by netting a goal of its own only seven minutes later when junior
Caitlin Greene recorded her first career goal. The Freeport, Ill., native headed the ball into the back of the net on a corner kick by sophomore
Allie Lakie who posted her first career assist.
With only four minutes and 30 seconds remaining in double overtime, Alex Hairston scored her second goal of the year from just outside the top of the 18-yard box to seal the victory for the Boilermakers.
The Boilermakers posted 22 more shots (30-8) than the Panthers and 10 more shots on goal (13-3). EIU took six fewer corner kicks (8-2) and committed two fewer fouls (7-5).
Greene paced the Panthers with two shots on goal while
Kristin Germann also added a shot on goal. Makaela Nellams led Purdue with seven shots, including four on goal.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Aug. 24 when they play host to Northern Iowa in their home opener at 3 p.m.
