CHARLESTON, Ill. – With five minutes remaining in double overtime, Ashley Capone scored the game-winning goal to lift the Northern Iowa women's soccer team over Eastern Illinois on Friday night at Lakeside Field. EIU dropped to 0-3 on the year.
Capone found the back of the net off a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box following a yellow card by EIU's
Caitlin Greene.
EIU took an early 1-0 advantage into halftime when they scored with only two seconds remaining on the clock. Greene scored her second goal of the season when she headed the ball into the back of the net on an
Allie Lakie corner kick.
UNI scored a late goal of its own, netting the equalizer in the 87
th minute to send the match into overtime. Caitlyn Fuller hit a shot from nearly 20 yards out to tie the match at one.
UNI took 10 more shots (19-9) than EIU, including eight more shots on goal (11-3). EIU committed three more fouls (13-10) while UNI had two more corner kicks (6-4).
Greene paced the EIU offense with two shots on goal while
Meagan Radloff added three shots. Five UNI players had two or more shots in the contest led by Kiki McClellan who had four shots.
Jessica Taldone (0-3) took the loss in goal for EIU, making eight saves and surrendering two goals. Erin Zaideman (3-0) made two saves and allowed one goal between the pipes for UNI.
EIU returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 26 against Cleveland State. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lakeside Field.
