EIU Falls to Grizzlies & Rockets at Oakland Invite

Freshman Abby Saalfrank finishes fine weekend play to earn all-tourney spot

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Eastern Illinois volleyball finished Oakland Invitational action on Saturday, losing in three to the host Grizzilies (25-22, 25-12, 25-23) before dropping a five-set heartbreaker (25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 24-26, 15-10) to Toledo.

After dropping all three weekend matchups in tourney play, the Panthers fall to 2-4 on the early season.

Freshman setter/right side hitter Abby Saalfrank finished her fine weekend play with consecutive double-digit kill performances on Saturday as she nailed 10 kills and dished out 12 assists in the loss at Oakland and 13 put-aways and 18 assists versus Toledo.

Last night versus Iowa, Saalfrank notched the first EIU triple-double since 1998 and came just one dig shy of accomplishing the same feat against the Rockets.  She also hit .333 against Toledo with just four errors to end up representing all Panthers on the all-tourney squad.

Junior outside hitter Reynae Hutchinson chipped in 10 kills in the five set thriller with Toledo and added 11 digs to nab her 18th career double-double and second of the season.

The Panther blocking game came alive versus Toledo as junior Stephanie Arnold led all players with seven stuffs, while Saalfrank tied seniors Alison Berens and Emily Franklin with five blocks apiece.

In other defensive numbers, freshman libero Stephanie Wallace came one dig shy of tying her early career high with 24 ups against Toledo after registering 14 digs against Oakland earlier in the day.

Classmate Marah Bradbury tied Wallace with two service aces against Toledo,while the setter also dished out 22 and 27 assists against the Grizzlies and Rockets, respectively, this afternoon.

Earlier versus Oakland, sophomore Kelsey Roggemann led all Panthers with an impressive .636 attack off seven kills with zero miscues, while she also tallied eight kills against Toledo.

For the weekend, EIU was out-hit .264 to .186, and also trailed the stat mark for aces (15 to 17), digs (177 to 181), blocks (22.0 to 24.), and points (185.0 to 217.0).

Panthers will next prepare for next weekend's Marquette Classic in Milwaukee, Wis., as EIU is set to face Wake Forest, #22-Michigan and the host Golden Eagle squad.
