INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's soccer team scored three, second-half goals to defeat Eastern Illinois, 3-0, on Friday night at the Butler Bowl. EIU falls to 2-6 on the year.
Butler's Sophia Macagnone scored two goals in the match, netting her first goal on a penalty kick in the 55
th minute. The freshman midfielder added her second goal 24 minutes later to put the Bulldogs up, 2-0.
Ali Backscheider scored the final goal of the match in the 88
th minute, sealing the victory for Butler and improving the team to 4-3-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs posted a 27-4 shot advantage in the match, including 10 more shots on goal (11-1). Butler committed three more fouls (11-8) and took six more corner kicks (7-1).
Kristin Germann paced the Panthers with two shots while
Brooke Sill and
Molly Hawkins both added one shot. Macagnone led the Butler attack with nine shots (five on goal).
Jessica Taldone (1-6) took the loss between the pipes for EIU as the redshirt-junior goalkeeper allowed three goals while making eight saves. Julie Burton (1-0) posted her first win and shutout of the year in goal for Butler, making one save on the night.
The Panthers return to action on Sept. 16 when they travel to Drake to conclude non-conference action. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
