EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Panther women's soccer team opened Ohio Valley Conference play with a 1-0 loss at SIU Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium. EIU drops to 2-8 (0-1 OVC) on the year.
The Cougars (4-3-1, 1-0 OVC) scored the lone goal of the match in the second minute when Erin Digiovanni netted her first goal of the season from five yards out off a corner kick from Cassidy Sherman.
SIUE recorded seven more shots (18-11) than EIU in the match, including one more shot on goal (7-6). The Panthers also committed two more fouls (11-9) while the Cougars took two more corner kicks (6-4).
Allie Lakie paced the Panther attack with three shots (one on goal) while
Kristin Germann added two shots on goal. Michelle Auer led the Cougars with five shots (three on goal).
Jessica Taldone (1-8) took the loss in goal, making six saves and surrendering one goal. Jennifer Pelley (4-1-1) posted the win and her fourth shutout of the season for SIUE between the pipes. The freshman goalkeeper also made six saves.
The Panthers return to action on Sept. 28 when they travel to Jacksonville State for a 7 p.m. match.
