GAME 1Eastern Illinois opens the fourth season under head coach
Jay Spoonhour with the Panthers biggest season opening test in school history as EIU plays nationally ranked Indiana. Only one other time in the school's NCAA Division I history have the Panthers opened the season against a nationally ranked team - that was in 1999 at No. 22 Iowa. EIU has not opened the season with a win since the 2009-10 season when the Panthers beat Toledo on the road.
ONE OF THE NEWEST ROSTERS IN THE NCAAEastern Illinois will open the season with one of the newest rosters in the NCAA. The Panthers are tied for seventh in the nation with the most newcomers on the roster entering year. EIU has nine new faces with six freshmen, two junior college transfers and one four-year transfer. Portland State, Tennessee State and Bradley lead the nation with 11 newcomers on their rosters for this season.
EIU MAKES THIRD POSTSEASON NCAA DIVISION I APPEARANCEEastern Illinois played in the 2015 CollegeInsiders.com Tournament to end the season as the Panthers lost to eventual champion Evansville in the second round. It was EIU's first postseason appearance since the 2001 NCAA Tournament and third ever as an NCAA Division I school. EIU beat Oakland in the opening round to post the school's first NCAA Division I postseason victory.
FACING NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMSEastern Illinois will be playing a nationally ranked team for the 19th time when EIU opens at Indiana on Friday. EIU is 0-18 all-time with the last game against a ranked opponent at No. 23 Creighton last November. EIU's closest game against a Top 25 team was a 76-66 overtime loss at No. 20 Iowa State in December 1987.
