CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri used a late second half run as the Redhawks came from behind to beat Eastern Illinois, 68-64, on Saturday night at the Show Me Center.
EIU fell to 14-10 overall, 7-4 in OVC play. The Panthers return to action on Thursday with a 5:15 p.m. game at Austin Peay. SEMO improved to 11-13, 5-6 in OVC play.
SEMO took its first lead of the game with 4:47 to play as J.J. Thompson sank a pair of free throws that capped a Redhawks 12-0 run. SEMO led 54-53. Thompson had 11 points including 4-of-4 at the free throw line.
Trae Anderson hit a free throw to tie the game at 54-54 before SEMO was able to use two offensive put-backs to build a 58-55 lead. J.T. Jones had one basket and Nino Johnson a dunk during what turned into a 20-3 second half Redhawks run.
Jarekious Bradley hit a 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining to make it a two possession game.  EIU went to the low block with Anderson who scored to make it a four point game in the final minute.  Anderson led EIU with 25 points.   SEMO made 14-of-20 free throws in the second half.
Eastern Illinois led the entire first half as
LeTrell Viser opened the scoring for the Panthers with a 3-pointer. The Panthers extended the first half lead to 10-2 with a 3-pointer by
Dylan Chatman, free throws by
Luke Piotrowski and a bucket by Anderson.
Cornell Johnston's 3-pointer at the 15:15 mark pushed EIU's lead to 13-4. SEMO responded with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 13-13 with 12:02 to play. Marcus Wallace and Antonius Cleveland combined for the Redhawks nine points in the run.
Anderson put EIU back in front with a jumper as he had ten points in the first half. EIU led 32-22 at the break taking the ten point lead on a Chatman 3-pointer in the final 45 seconds.
SEMO shot 50 percent in the second half. Cleveland had 10 points and 12 rebounds for SEMO. Wallace led SEMO with 18 points. Johnson finished with 10 points.
Piotrowski and Johnston both added eight points for EIU.Â
