Men's Soccer Wins Exhibition Match 2-1

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's soccer used a goal in the second period by freshman Brendan McDonough to pick up a 2-1 win over Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon in exhibition action at Lakeside Field.  The Panthers will host Saint Xavier on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. to wrap up their exhibition schedule.
 
Cincinnati got on the board in the first period as John Magna scored off an assist from Adam Wilson in the 20th minute.  Magna was able to beat EIU starting goalkeeper Ben Feltes with the shot after both raced to a loose ball.  Feltes would play 49 minutes in goal while freshman R.J. Hill played the other 41 minutes.  Both EIU goalkeepers finished with two saves.
 
EIU was able to even the score at 1-1 as Sean Kirwan scored on a penalty kick in the 29th minute.  The Panthers goal was set up after Justin Oliver was taken down from behind in the box racing to a free ball.
 
EIU scored the winning goal in the 52nd minute as McDonough took a long pass from Zach Medawattage and beat the Bearcats goalkeeper Alex Gill in a one-on-one situation. 
 
The exhibition match was played in three 30-minute periods.  Cincinnati held a 16-11 shots advantage but the Panthers finished with seven shots on goal compared to five for Cincinnati.
 
In addition to the two goals by Kirwan and McDonough, EIU had shots on goal by Dominic Recca, Kyle Callender, Justin Oliver, Tyler Oliver and Jacob Lysik.
