CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois men's soccer team earned their first Summit League win of the season Sunday morning following a 1-0 result over Fort Wayne. The victory is the second in a row for the Panthers after their match at Cincinnati was postponed as EIU improves to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play. Fort Wayne falls to 7-8-0 and 1-3-0 in the Summit League following the loss.

Alex Castaneda earned his second goal of the season to lift EIU over the Mastodons late in the match. The freshman finished the match with two shots, both on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Mike Novotny was crucial in the win for the Panthers recording six saves while facing 13 shots to earn his third shut out of the season.

Fort Wayne pressed early throughout the first half of the match out shooting the Panthers 6-2 in the first period. It would not be enough as both teams went into halftime deadlocked 0-0.

Trevor Kerns and Castaneda were the only Panthers to record shots in the first half, both on goal.

The Panthers picked up the pressure in the second period recording five of their seven total shots and six of their seven corner kicks all during the second half.

EIU finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute as the Panthers looked to take advantage on a quick break. Marcus Menniti launched a pass from the Panther defensive third to Castaneda streaking down the sidelines. The Dallas, Texas native worked the ball towards the top of the penalty area and ripped a shot into the left upper 90 to put EIU on top 1-0.

The assist from Menniti is his first career assist and point while at EIU.

The Mastodons pressed hard following the goal looking for the equalizer, but the EIU defense held strong not allowing a single shot from Fort Wayne in the closing minutes to earn the victory.

Christian Sosnowski and Kerns both finished the match with one shot on goal each. Anton Olsson, Tyler Enright, and Julian Montoya each recorded one shot.

The Mastodons out shot EIU 13-7 in the match led by Oscar Uyamadu with three shots, one on goal.

The Panthers have their home season finale Saturday (Oct. 29) as they host in-state and conference rival Western Illinois at 1 p.m.
