CHARLESTON, Ill. – After two matches on the road this past weekend, the Eastern Illinois volleyball team returned to Lantz Arena for a single contest against SIUE. The Eastern Illinois volleyball team hosted SIUE as part of the Panthers "Cancer Awareness Match." The Panthers were swept by the Cougars on Wednesday night, 3-0 (15-25, 13-25, 12-25). EIU drops to 5-21 (2-9 OVC) while SIUE goes to 16-6 (9-2 OVC). The Panthers will return to action this Saturday on the road at Tennessee State.

Allie Hueston and Maria Brown connected on a block to give the Panthers a slight 3-2 advantage to begin the third set. After SIUE overtook the lead shortly after, Eastern Illinois was able to tie the score at 6-6 on a block by Josie Winner and Abby Knight. SIUE broke the 6-6 tie and used a 6-0 run to pull away from the Panthers and took the first set of the match.

After SIUE took the first three points to begin the second set, EIU responded with three-straight points of their own as an ace by Winner knotted the score at 3-3. SIUE regained the lead, but the Panthers kept the score close with the Cougars. After a kill by Taylor Smith cut the SIUE lead to 7-6, the Cougars began to pull away and earned the win in the second set.

The Panthers picked up the first two points of the third set on a kill by Maggie Runge followed by a block by Runge and Brown.  SIUE soon over took the lead at 4-3 on a kill by Jackie Scott. The Cougars used a 7-0 run down the stretch and completed the straight-set sweep over the Panthers after winning the third set.

Smith led the Eastern Illinois offense as she recorded seven kills in the match. Lindsey Powers posted a team-high 12 digs to lead the EIU defense.
