Church, Johnson Win OVC Weekly Awards

Panthers beat No. 25 Tennessee State to improve to 4-2, 2-1 in the OVC

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Coming off an exciting 35-34 win over No. 25 Tennessee State on Saturday night, two Eastern Illinois players earned Ohio Valley Conference Weekly honors on Sunday.

Devin Church was named the co-Offensive Player of the Week while David Johnson was named the co-Defensive Player of the Week. 

The 19th ranked Panthers return to action next Saturday at Tennessee Tech with a 6 p.m. kick off.

Church scored three of the Panthers five touchdowns on the evening including what proved to be the game winner with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  He had seven receptions for 37 yards with touchdown catches of two and four yards.   Church added 94 yards rushing as EIU racked up 221 yards on the ground against one of the best run defenses in the OVC.  He scored on a 1-yard run that put EIU up 14-0 in the first quarter.  Church is currently second in the OVC in rushing and third in receiving touchdowns.

Johnson won his second OVC weekly award during only his third week of action this season as the South Carolina transfer finished with nine tackles.  He had 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry as the Panthers came from behind in the fourth quarter.  He is averaging seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a half sack per game in those three appearances.
