CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Eastern Illinois men's soccer team fell 3-1 at Cincinnati Tuesday evening making up for their postponed match earlier in the year. Following the loss EIU falls to 5-10-1 overall, but remain 2-3-0 in Summit League play. Cincinnati improves to 9-6-1 on the season and 3-3-0 in conference play.
Jonathan Huerta was the lone goal scorer for the Panthers earning his first career goal at EIU.
The Bearcats got on the board early in the first period after drawing a penalty kick in the 11th minute. Adam Wilson stepped up to the spot for Cincinnati and drilled the shot into the back of the net to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
Cincinnati extended their lead later in the first period as Patrick Nielsen sent a through ball to Daniel Oginni making a run into the box. Oginni managed to score in the 34th minute to give the Bearcats a 2-0 cushion.
Tim Pieper, Yann Nsoga, and Gabriel Puga all recorded one shot in the first half as Cincinnati out shot the Panthers 7-3 throughout the first period.
Cincinnati added to their lead midway through the second period as David Sanz sent a ball in to Jonny Williams who scored off the volley to put the Bearcats up 3-0 in the 68th minute.
The Panthers would not go out without a fight though as they earned a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 75th minute. Huerta sent the kick over the Bearcat wall and into the net to prevent the shut out and make it 3-1 late in the match.
The Bearcats were led by Williams who recorded five shots, three on goal.
Mike Novotny recorded five saves in the match. Huerta finished the match with two shots both on goal. Tyler Massa, Trevor Kerns, and Davis Wegmann also recorded one shot a piece.
The Panthers close out their season Saturday (Nov. 5) at IUPUI as they attempt to clinch a spot in the Summit League Championship Tournament.
