EIU Women Stumble Late, Fall To Illinois State 60-49

Erica Brown records triple-double, but Panthers fall to Illinois State after a big fourth quarter from the Redbirds.

NORMAL, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois women's basketball team could not hang on late falling to Illinois State 60-49 Thursday night following a big fourth quarter effort from the Redbirds. With the loss the Panthers fall to 4-4 on the season while ISU improves to 3-3.

Erica Brown led the team recording EIU's first triple-double since 2010 with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 blocks. 

Grace Lennox was the only other Panther in double-figures finishing the game with 10 points and five rebounds.

It was a tight back-and-forth game throughout the first three quarters as the Panthers managed to take a slim 38-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Redbirds came out shooting in the fourth period opening the quarter on an 8-0 run thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from ISU to jump ahead 44-38 with 7:59 left in the game.

It was all Illinois State in the fourth quarter as the Redbirds shot 64 percent in the final period making three of their six treys in the game during the fourth quarter. EIU could not mount a comeback going cold in the fourth quarter shooting only 25 percent as ISU pushed their lead to as high as 13 points following a layup from Katrina Beck with 36 seconds left.

A pair of free throws from Zharia Lenoir in the dying seconds earned the final score of 60-49 in favor of the Redbirds.

The Panthers committed 23 turnovers in the game resulting in 25 points for Illinois State. ISU out-shot EIU 24-11 in the fourth quarter.

EIU started the game off hot jumping out in front early opening the first quarter on a 9-2 run capped off by a layup from Jalisha Smith at the 4:12 mark to start the game.

Smith pushed the EIU lead to as high as nine points in the first quarter before Illinois State's Frannie Corrigan earned a bucket to bring the first quarter to a close with EIU leading 16-9. Smith finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds.

It was a tale of two quarters as the Redbirds raced out on a 10-2 run of their own to take the lead in the second quarter after a bucket from Brechelle Beachum at the 4:55 mark made it 19-18 in favor of ISU.

The Panthers went cold from the floor throughout most of the second quarter going 1-for-12 until Smith snapped their cold streak with a layup to break Illinois State's run. EIU closed the gap following Smith's bucket as Lennox drilled a three to send the game into halftime tied at 25.

Both teams battled in the third period as neither team could string together buckets to earn a lead. Lennox once again came in clutch sinking a pull-up jumper with 13 seconds left to give EIU the 38-36 lead heading into the final quarter.

Illinois State's Beachum led all scorers with with 24 points.

EIU finished the game out-rebounding the Redbirds 48-36.

The Panthers have another quick turnaround as they head to Valparaiso Saturday at 1:30 pm.
