CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Eastern Illinois women's basketball team fell on the road to Southeast Missouri 82-52 Saturday [Feb. 20] after a cold-shooting first half.
With the loss the Panthers fall to 3-23 and 2-12 in the OVC while SEMO improves to 15-12 and 8-6.
Jalisha Smith led the scoring for EIU with 12 points while pulling down five rebounds.
It was a close game in the first quarter as a three-point bucket from Halle Stull tied the game 9-9 at the 2:56 mark. The Redhawks scored the final seven points of the quarter to take the lead 16-9.
SEMO continued their scoring in the second quarter going on a 9-0 run throughout the first half of the second period. Smith finally broke the Redhawks run and earned EIU's first points of the period sinking a jumper at the 4:38 mark to make it 25-11. The Panthers went on their own 8-2 run to cut the lead to 10 with 3:19 left in the first half, but SEMO would answer with a 7-1 run to close out the half up 34-18.
EIU shot only 17 percent in the first half as compared to Southeast Missouri's 45 percent shooting.
The Panthers started to feel it in the third quarter trading buckets with SEMO to open the second half, but the Redhawks utilized a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 59-33 with 1:55 left in the quarter. Southeast Missouri held the lead headed into the fourth quarter 64-38.
SEMO earned their largest lead of the game scoring the first five points of the final period to make the score 69-38. The Panthers managed to cut into Southeast Missouri's lead scoring the next eight points capped off by three points the hard way from Erica Brown to make it 69-46 with 7:15 left to play. Brown finished the game with eight points and six rebounds.
The Redhawks would fend off EIU closing out the game on a 13-6 run to secure the 82-52 win.
EIU finished the game shooting 26 percent, and were out-scored in the paint 44-18 by the Redhawks.
Grace Lennox had nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Southeast Missouri had four players score in double-digits led by Brianna Mitchell with 22.
EIU has their last road game of the season next Wednesday [Feb. 24] at UT Martin.
