CHARLESTON, Ill. - It was a gorgeous day for Eastern Illinois softball as the Panthers shutout Austin Peay in both games on a sunny Saturday afternoon. EIU earned back-to-back shutouts over the Governors in Saturday's doubleheader taking the first game 6-0 followed by a 3-0 victory in the second game of the day.

With the wins EIU improves to 14-23 and 8-6 in the OVC while APSU falls to 6-28 and 2-14 in the conference.

Both Jessica Wireman and Michelle Rogers recorded complete game victories to improve to 10-16 and 4-7 respectively on the season. Both pitchers recorded seven innings on the mound walking only one batter, but Wireman led the day in strikeouts fanning 11 batters in game one. Rogers earned two strikeouts in her start while only giving up two hits to the Governors.

Kylie Bennett and April Markowski led the Panthers at the plate as both players combined for six of EIU's 12 hits on the day going 3-for-7 at the plate. The two seniors also combined for five of EIU's eight total RBIs with Markowski recording three RBIs in game one against APSU.

The Panthers opened up their scoring in game one against Austin Peay in the bottom of the first inning. EIU loaded the bases as Kayla Bear reached on an error to open the inning. Singles from Katie Watson and Bennett filled the bases for Markowski who came in and ripped a single into center field to score two runners and put the Panthers up early 2-0.

EIU held on to their lead all the way into the fifth inning when Markowski would earn her third RBI of the day off a ground-out to the second baseman to score Haylee Beck from third base. Jennifer Ames added one more run for the Panthers before the inning was over hitting a single to center field to bring in Watson from third base and extend EIU's lead to 4-0.

After putting runners on first and second base in the bottom of the sixth inning Austin Peay pulled their starting pitcher Autumn Hanners, bringing in Christiana Gable to close out the game. Hanners finished the game with 5.1 innings pitched while throwing four strikeouts and giving up three earned runs off six hits. The Panthers went right after the new pitcher as Bennett singled up the middle to score both runners and give EIU a 6-0 lead.

Wireman closed out the game recording her 11th strikeout on the final at-bat of game one to secure the victory for EIU.

It seemed to be the same story different chapter in the late game for the Panthers as EIU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. It was a wild inning for EIU as Bear was walked to open the inning. Bear eventually stole second base. After the steal Beck attempted to move Bear to third on a sacrifice bunt, but a mishandled ball by the first baseman allowed Beck to make it all the way to second base safely and bring Bear around to score to put EIU up 1-0.

Watson would drive Beck home from second on the next at-bat as she ripped a single to left field to extend EIU's lead to 2-0. Markowski advanced Watson to third base with an infield single, but Watson eventually reached home plate due to yet another error from APSU as Markowski attempted to steal second base. The Governors second baseman drew the error on the steal attempt allowing Markowski to reach third and Watson to score making it 3-0.

That would prove to be all the Panthers needed as neither team managed a run the rest of the game giving EIU the 3-0 win to earn the doubleheader sweep.

EIU recorded some of their best base running this season going a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts on the day. Both Bear and Markowski were 3-for-3 when attempting to steal throughout the two games.

The Panthers look for the series sweep over Austin Peay as they close out their home stand with one more game against the Governors Sunday at 12 pm.
