Box Score

MURRAY, Ky. - Jessica Wireman nearly threw a no-hitter Sunday afternoon as the EIU softball team won the series finale over Murray State 2-0. With the win the Panthers snap a seven-game losing streak and improve to 10-23 overall and 4-6 in the OVC while the Racers fall to 14-18 and 4-6 in the conference.

Wireman improved to 8-16 on the mound recording the complete game shutout while throwing 3 strikeouts and walking two batters. Wireman went 5.1 innings before giving up her first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Both Kylie Bennett and Haylee Beck recorded an RBI for EIU with Bennett going 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI double in the first inning.

Bennett put the Panthers on the board in the top of the first inning after Kayla Bear opened the game with single. Bear was thrown out at second on the next at-bat as Beck reached on the fielder's choice. Beck was brought around to score following Bennett's double to left center field to give EIU the 1-0 lead.

It was a defensive battle for the rest of the game as the Panthers held Murray State hitless until the sixth inning. Only Katie Watson recorded a hit for either team between the second and sixth inning. Watson smashed a single up the middle in the top of the third inning eventually making it around to third base before recording the third out after being caught trying to steal home.

The Racers ended Wireman's no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning as Shelby Miller hit a single up the middle. Miller finished the inning stranded on first base.

The Panthers extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning as Mady Poulter singled up the middle to open the inning. Poulter advanced to second base following a sacrifice bunt from Ashlynne Paul on the next at-bat. Poulter eventually came around to score after advancing to third on a fly-out from Bear, and then crossing home plate safely following a single from Beck.

Wireman and the Panther defense closed out the game recording the 2-0 victory and only giving up two hits throughout the game.

Jennette Isaac was the only player to successfully record a stolen base in the game to earn her fourth steal of the season.
