MARTIN, Tenn. – After scoring 16 runs in the series opener yesterday against UT Martin, Eastern Illinois was unable to reproduce the offensive output in game two and fell to the Skyhawks 2-0 on Saturday. The two teams will play the rubber game to decide a series winner tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Eastern Illinois falls to 11-38 (5-21 OVC). UT Martin improves to 18-31 (8-18 OVC).
The Panthers had their best scoring chance in the top of the second inning. After
Tyler Tesmond,
Nick Maton, and
Joseph Duncan singled, Eastern Illinois had the bases loaded with just one out. An inning-ending double play by the UT Martin infield kept the game scoreless.
UT Martin had their bases loaded scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning as Nick Gavello produced an RBI single and gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
UT Martin added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Daniel Kerwin RBI single.
Duncan singled in the ninth and a groundout moved him into scoring position, but Alex Evans cut down the Panthers' rally for his first save of the season.
Matt Wivinis suffered the loss on the mound for Eastern Illinois, allowing just two runs over 7.1 innings.
Duncan led Eastern Illinois on offense, ending his day 3-for-5 at the plate.
Mitch Gasbarro added a pair of base hits.
