Box Score

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – It was a long opening night for the Eastern Illinois men's soccer team as they began the 2016 regular season with a 1-1 tie at Northern Kentucky. The match lasted nearly four hours due to early lightning delays and double overtime.

Tonight's tie marks the first result EIU has earned against NKU after losing the past three years in a row to the Norse. It is also the first tie ever to open the regular season for the Panthers.

After a delayed start due to lightning, freshmen Alessandro Corti, Anton Olsson, and Marcus Menniti were able to begin their Panther careers by earning starts in their first match for EIU.

The first half was a battle for superiority with neither team able to get the upper hand as lightning struck once again before the first half could come to a close. The lightning forced another delay in the 43rd minute with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

The Panthers led the Norse in shots up to that point 3-1 with EIU's best opportunity coming from a Davis Wegmann shot at the top of the penalty area forcing a save from NKU's Christian Carey. Wegmann's shot was the only shot on goal in the first half up to the lightning delay.

Once both teams returned to the field following the delay, the Panthers went on the offensive as the half drew to a close. Julian Montoya was dragged down while making a run in the penalty area leading to a Panther penalty kick. Wegmann stepped up to the spot and slotted it home with a shot in the low left corner of the net just out of the reach of the Norse keeper to give EIU a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute.

The Norse tied the match up midway through the second half as NKU's Bastian Beckers headed the ball to Campbell Morris in the box. Morris was able to take one touch and put the ball in the back of the net to make it 1-1 in the 66th minute.

With neither team able to break the deadlock in the second period the match headed into extra time tied 1-1.

It was a back-and-forth affair for both sides throughout overtime but no one was able to find the match winning goal as time ran out with the final score of 1-1 after two extra periods.

Wegmann finished the match with three shots, two on goal while Montoya recorded two shots of his own with one on goal. Brendan McDonough, Christian Sosnowski, Jonathan Huerta, and Corti all recorded one shot a piece.

Mike Novotny played all 120 minutes in the net for EIU after earning the start, but did not record a save in the match.

EIU returns to Lakeside Field for their home opener against Milwaukee this Sunday at 12 p.m.
