Men's Soccer Drops Summit League Opener 3-2

The EIU men's soccer team fell at Oral Roberts 3-2 to open Summit League play.

TULSA, Okla. - The Eastern Illinois men's soccer team opened Summit League play Saturday evening falling to Oral Roberts 3-2. With the loss the Panthers fall to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference while ORU improves to 4-3-1 and 1-0-0 in the Summit League.

It was a whirlwind first half for both teams as Oral Roberts opened the match scoring midway through the first period. The Golden Eagles' got on the board in the 23rd minute as a pass from Javo Reyes found Junior Chavez inside the seven-yard box to give Oral Roberts the 1-0 lead.

Julian Montoya tied the match up less than five minutes later scoring in the 28th minute as Andre Nappa sent a cross into the penalty area to record his first ever assist at EIU.

ORU regained the lead later in the first period after earning a penalty kick in the 34th minute. Santiago Riveros stepped up to the spot for the Golden Eagles to make it 2-1 to close out the first half.

Riveros picked up right where he left off in the second half dribbling the ball into the penalty box and scoring in the 50th minute to give ORU a 3-1 cushion.

Davis Wegmann pulled one back for the Panthers later in the half after EIU earned a penalty kick of their own in the 64th minute. ORU's goalkeeper Parker Johnson saved the PK, but Wegmann was able to jump on the loose ball and finish the play to make it 3-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles. 

The Panthers were unable to find the equalizer in the final minutes of the match as Oral Roberts earned the 3-2 victory.

Mike Novotny started in the net for the Panthers recording four saves in the match.

Trevor Kerns and Justin Oliver each recorded one goal in the match. 

Chavez finished the match with five shots, three on goal while Riveros was 4-for-4 in shots on goal. ORU out shot EIU 17-5.

The Panthers return to Charleston this Tuesday when they face Valparaiso at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
