Men's Soccer Falls To Marshall 1-0

The men's soccer team fell to Marshall Sunday afternoon 1-0.

Box Score

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois men's soccer lost 1-0 to Marshall Sunday afternoon in match two of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader. The Thundering Herd out shot EIU 8-1 as an early second half goal proved to be the deciding one in the match.

With the loss the Panthers drop to 1-2-1 on the season along with starting goalkeeper Mike Novotny who logged four saves throughout the match. Novotny's four saves against Marshall surpassed his season total up to today's match as the junior keeper now has seven saves on the season.

It was a very stingy first half for both both squads as Marshall and EIU's defenses held each team in check throughout the early goings of the match. The first shot on goal did not come until the 40th minute of the first period resulting in a save from Novotny. The first period finished with only two shots recorded, both coming from Marshall.

The Thundering Herd kept up the pressure to open the second half as Carlos Diaz-Salcedo received a cross in the box. Diaz-Salcedo ripped a close range shot that Novotny was able to get a hand to, but the deflection forced the ball up in the air and back down to Diaz-Salcedo's head as he finished off the play scoring in the 51st minute.

The early second half goal would be all it would take as Marshall was able to hold the Panthers at bay with a 1-0 lead.

EIU's best opportunity came from a corner kick with less than a minute left in the match. Justin Oliver sent a nice ball into the box that found the head of Trevor Kerns. Kerns managed to re-direct the corner kick towards the box, but Marshall's Trevor Clemens was waiting to pluck the ball out of the air.

The header from Kerns was EIU's only shot of the match. Diaz-Salcedo finished the match with three shots, all on goal.

The Panthers have some time off before the next match as they close out their four-match home stand next Wednesday (Sept. 14) against Saint Ambrose (Iowa) at 4 p.m.
