MARTIN, Tenn. - UT Martin used an 18-7 run in the second overtime session as the Skyhawks beat Eastern Illinois, 82-71, on Thursday night at the Elam Center.
UTM improved to 13-8 overall, 3-3 in the OVC. EIU dropped to 9-10 overall, 1-5 in the OVC. The Panthers play at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Southeast Missouri.
EIU led by 13 points in the first half as
Montell Goodwin had the hot hand early on, giving the Panthers a 25-12 lead at the 10:08 mark in the first half. During the early run junior guard
Terrell Lewis set the EIU career record for assists as
Demetrius McReynolds drained a bucket at 16:16 on the Lewis assist.
UTM climbed back into the game in the first half making 11 free throws as they were 20-of-26 for the game. UTM took its first lead of the game on a three point play by Kedar Edwards with 2:53 to play in the first half as the Skyhawks led 34-33 at the half.
EIU again opened the second half with a good run as the Panthers had a 10-0 run to open the half. Jacolby Mobley tied the game at 46-46 with 8:08 to play capping a 10-0 Skyhawks run. Mobley had a game high 28 points going 5-of-9 from 3-point range.
UTM had two shots to win the game in the final 41 seconds of regulation as the score was tied 58-58 after 40 minutes. Both teams scored six points in the first overtime session as they were tied at 64-64.
In the second overtime session UTM jumped out on an early run. The Skyhawks were 3-of-3 from 3-point range in overtime. Javier Martinez had eight of his 12 points in the final overtime period. Martinez added 10 points for a double-double.
Goodwin led the Panthers with 20 points while
Patrick Muldoon chipped in a career high 14 points. Crossland rounded out the EIU double figure scorers with 10 points.
