Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Eastern Illinois volleyball traveled to Cape Giradeau to face OVC opponent Southeast Missouri in their season finale Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fell to the Redhawks losing in five sets (17-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21 and 7-15). Eastern Illinois finishes the 2017 regular season with a record of 14-14 (8-8 OVC).
The final match of the season for EIU went all five-sets Saturday afternoon when they took on Southeast Missouri. Both teams exchanged wins each set but Southeast Missouri was able to walk away with the victory. EIU led in categories for the match in blocks with 13, assists with 61, and points with 80.
The second set featured great offensive play from the Panthers as they hit for a combined average of .300. EIU was 16-for-40 in total attacks for the set. Offensively leading the Panthers in the match were
Taylor Smith who finished with 17 kills,
Allie Hueston who finished with 13, and
Maria Brown who claimed 11.
The Redhawks hit for their best average in the first set when they totaled a match high .361. Southeast Missouri was 16-for-36 in total attacks for the set. Leading the Redhawks offense was Haley Bilbruck who tallied 15 kills in the match. Allie Henkelman also contributed to the Redhawks offensive success totaling 31 assists.
Smith claimed her NCAA leading ninth triple-double of the season finishing with a team-high 17 kills, 25 assists, and 18 digs. Smith also collected eight blocks and was two blocks away from a quadruple-double.
Gina Furlin helped out the Panther offense leading with 28 assists. Defensively leading the Panthers was
Anne Hughes who led the Panthers with 22 digs.
