SAN DIEGO – San Diego State was 13-of-25 from 3-point range led by a career high 31 points by freshman Matt Mitchell as the Aztecs beat Eastern Illinois, 94-63, on Monday evening at the Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs opened with an 11-3 run scoring baskets in transition to improve to 3-1 on the season. EIU fell to 1-3 and will host Fontbonne University on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
SDSU hit three of its first four 3-pointers pushing the lead to 20-8 eventually taking a 40-25 halftime lead.
The Panthers would shoot better in the second half as
Michael Chavers came off the bench to score 11 points for EIU as the California native was 4-of-5 from the field.
After going 6-of-13 in the first half from 3-point range SDSU was 7-of-12 from behind the arc in the second half. Most of the damage was done by Mitchell as he scored 16 points during an extended 21-5 run by the Aztecs in the second half. Mitchell was 7-of-11 from 3-point range for the game.
Jajuan Starks was EIU's leading scorer finishing with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting.  Starks pulled down a team high seven rebounds.Â
Montell Goodwin had 14 points.
Malik Pope posted a double-double for San Diego State with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Trey Kell had 14 points and Devin Watson added ten. Â
