MILWAUKEE – Eastern Illinois pushed Big East member Marquette on Monday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center but in the end the Golden Eagles were able to pull out an 86-83 overtime win.
The Panthers had five players finish in double figures led by
Jajuan Starks with 27 points as EIU fell to 2-4 on the year. Marquette was led by Sam Hauser with 30 points to improve to 4-2.
Hauser hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining in regulation that tied the game at 68-68. EIU had one final shot to win in regulation but came up short.Â
Hauser and
Montell Goodwin traded 3-pointers for Marquette and EIU to open the overtime session. Andrew Rowsey then hit a 3-pointer with 3:03 to play that gave Marquette the lead for good. Goodwin had 12 points for EIU. Rowsey finished with 16 for Marquette.
In the final 2:30 of the overtime EIU traded free throws by Marquette for lay-ups by
D'Angelo Jackson. Marquette was 21-of-28 from the line in the game and 8-of-10 on free throws in overtime.
EIU cut the lead to 82-81 with 15 seconds remaining as
Ray Crossland converted a four-point play. Crossland had 13 points. Jackson added 11 and
Muusa Dama had 12.
EIU lead by 11 points in the first half and held a seven point lead in the second half. Hauser was able to shoot the Golden Eagles back into the game each time. He was 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the game.
Eastern Illinois shot 58 percent in the opening half and held a 15-13 rebound advantage as the Panthers took a 38-35 lead to the locker room.Â
The Panthers opened with an early 11-1 run as Marquette went without a field goal for just over six minutes. The Golden Eagles had 3-pointers by Hauser and Markus Howard to quickly get back in the game. They were 5-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half and 11-of-27 from beyond the arc in the game. Howard added 14 points for Marquette.
Marquette took its first leads with 8:56 to play in the first on a driving basket by Sacar Anim. The two teams would then trade the lead several times with EIU closing the half on a 6-0 run with a lay-up by Jackson, free throws by Starks and a jumper at the buzzer by Goodwin.Â
EIU is back in action on Friday night at Bradley.Â
