Panthers fall to 0-2 in the OVC with 70-54 loss at APSU

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. –  Austin Peay slowly pushed a three point halftime lead to double figures with just under ten minutes to play on Saturday night as they beat Eastern Illinois, 70-54, at the Dunn Center.

EIU fell to 4-9 overall, 0-2 in the OVC.  The Panthers return to action on Thursday at Morehead State.  Austin Peay improved to 7-7 overall, 2-0 in the OVC.

EIU held a 33-29 lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the first half but the Panthers went cold and did not score for the final 3:18 of the half as APSU went on a 7-0 run to lead 36-33.

Montell Goodwin was hot in the first half for EIU scoring 13 of his 21 points in the opening half for EIU. 

In the second half EIU cooled off shooting 29 percent from the field while finishing the game shooting 36 percent.  It was the eighth time this season on the road that EIU has shot below 40 percent from the field.

Averyl Ugba put APSU up 55-44 with 9:54 to play on a lay-up in the paint to give the Governors the double figure lead.  Ugba was one of five Governors in double figures on the night with 17 points and 11 rebounds.    Terry Taylor had 12 points and 11 rebounds as APSU finished with a 46-29 rebound margin.

Jajuan Starks would answer Ugba's lay-up with a driving lay-up as the junior scored ten points, the first time he has reached double figures for EIU since scoring 27 points at Marquette.  APSU would then put the game away with a jumper by Taylor and 3-pointer by Chris Porter-Bunton.

Porter-Bunton, Dayton Gumm and Zach Glotta all added ten points for APSU.

Ray Crossland had ten points for EIU while Aboubacar Diallo had five of EIU's eight team blocks.
