Women's Basketball Defeats APSU In Overtime 78-73

The EIU women's basketball team held Austin Peay to three points in overtime to win 78-73 Saturday afternoon.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Eastern Illinois defense held Austin Peay to 0-for-7 shooting in overtime to earn the 78-73 victory Saturday afternoon.

Three Panthers finished the game in double-figures as EIU recorded their third overtime victory of the season. The win improves EIU 9-18 on the year and 5-10 in the OVC while APSU drops to 12015 and 6-8 in the conference.

Grace Lennox led all scorers recording 27 points nearly earning a double-double with nine rebounds and six assists.

The Panthers went into the second half leading the Lady Governors 41-29, but a nearly five minute scoreless drought allowed the Lady Governors to get within four points. A free throw from Lennox finally broke the 8-0 run by APSU as the Panthers went into the fourth quarter leading 53-46. 

The two teams traded buckets throughout the fourth quarter as Austin Peay earned their first lead of the game following a jumper from Beth Rates at the 4:55 mark to make it 61-60. 

There were five lead changes and five ties throughout the fourth quarter as Lennox's layup tied the game 70-70 with 14 seconds left. APSU could not convert on their final possession as the game headed into overtime.

EIU jumped out in front early in the extra period following a free throw from Lennox and a jumper from Brittin Boyer. The Panthers built their lead to as high as six points following free throws from Lennox to make it 77-71 with 28 seconds left to play. EIU was able to earn 78-73 win holding APSU to only three points, all from the free throw line.

EIU finished the game shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and out-rebounding the Lady Governors 43-36.

Both teams opened Saturday's game trading buckets before the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to take the lead 9-2 at the 6:45 mark. EIU built their lead to as high as 14 points closing out the quarter leading the Lady Governors 21-7. The Panther defense held APSU without a field goal for the final 5:25 of the first quarter. 

APSU shot only 16 percent in the first quarter as OVC-leading scorer Tearra Banks was held scoreless in the first period.

The Lady Governors were able to cut EIU's lead down to single-digits in the second quarter thanks to a 7-0 run capped off by a layup from Brianne Alexander to make it 29-20 in favor of the Panthers.

The Panthers answered right back with a 10-2 run coming out of a Coach Black timeout to regain their double-digit lead. EIU kept the Lady Governors at bay throughout the rest of the quarter closing out the first half leading 41-29.

EIU shot 57 percent in the first half compared to 35 percent for Austin Peay. Boyer recorded 10 of her 14 points in the first half tying her career high with eight rebounds. Erica Brown was the third panther in double-figures finishing the game with 10 points despite fouling out early in the fourth quarter.

APSU had four players in double-figures led by Banks who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Panthers close out their season next Saturday (Feb. 25) at SIU Edwardsville.
