NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois baseball (7-26, 3-10 OVC) fell to Belmont (15-17, 10-6 OVC) in game one of the weekend's three-game OVC series Thursday, 10-1.
The EIU offense scattered four hits in the game, led by
Jimmy Govern who finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Govern extended his current hitting streak to 13 games.
Logan Beaman and
Dougie Parks recorded the other two hits for the Panthers.
Jake Haberer took the loss on the mound for the Panthers as he allowed five runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings pitched.
Devin Rose and
Cole Berry combined to throw 2.2 scoreless frames to end the game on the mound for EIU.
Belmont took and early 4-0 advantage against the Panthers with a run in both the first and third innings and two runs in the second. Belmont extended their lead in the sixth. Belmont took advantage of a pair of EIU errors and brought across two early runs in the inning. The Bruins extended their lead later in the inning on a three-run home run from Matt Cogen and a solo home run from Chas Hadden to bring the score to 10-0 in favor of the Bruins.
The Panthers would not go away quietly however as Govern legged out a one-out double to start an EIU rally in the ninth. Beaman plated Govern on the next play with an RBI single, but was thrown out trying to stretch the base hit to a double. Parks followed with a double over the left fielder's head, but that would be as close as the Panthers would get as Belmont's starter Tyler Vaughn got the next EIU batter to fly out and earned the complete game victory on the mound.
Eastern Illinois and Belmont will continue their series on Friday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
