CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois softball team only needed one run Tuesday afternoon to secure a 1-0 victory over the visiting Fort Wayne Mastodons. With the win EIU improves to 25-17 on the year while Fort Wayne drops to 9-32.

The Panthers were able to hold Fort Wayne scoreless thanks to the stellar combined pitching of Jessica Wireman and Michelle Rogers. Both pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in the game as Wireman recorded the win to improve to 14-9 this season while Rogers earned her third save of the year.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning as Kaitlyn Crossen was hit by a pitch in her lead-off at-bat to put one runner on. Crossen advanced to second on a ground-out by Kayla Bear before Haley Mitchell ripped a single through the left side to record the only RBI of the day and give EIU the 1-0 lead.

Wireman and Rogers held the Mastodons to only four hits in the game.

Mady Poulter finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a double in her first appearance. Mitchell was the only other Panther to record multiple hits going 2-for-3 for the game.

The Panthers now go on the road for two crucial OVC doubleheaders starting at Tennessee Tech Saturday (Apr. 22) followed by OVC-leading Jacksonville State Sunday (Apr. 23)
