CHARLESTON, Ill. – UT Martin scored one run in the top of the first and Eastern Illinois answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the second. The Skyhawks added four runs in their half of the third and pulled away for a 15-3 victory in game two of the weekend Ohio Valley Conference series at Coaches Stadium.
UT Martin improved to 23-23, 10-13 in the OVC. EIU dropped to 16-31, 9-14 in the OVC. The final game of the series will be 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Skyhawks scored in the first as they loaded the bases with no outs against EIU starter
Michael McCormick. McCormick was able to get a ground ball double play, but Creighton Eldridge came around to score after he opened the game with a single up the middle.
EIU answered in the second inning as
Dougie Parks opened with a single and moved to third on a double by
Matt Albert. Parks would even the score at 1-1 on a ground out by
Josh Turnock.
In the third UTM was able to get to EIU starter McCormick with four runs. The big hit of the inning was a three run homer by Keylen Steen. Steen finished the day 4-of-5 with five RBI. He was one of two Skyhawks players with five RBI in the game. McCormick would pitch four innings for the Panthers as they used five pitchers on the day. He fell to 1-5 on the season.
The Skyhawks opened up the game with three runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Dan Kerwin would add a pair of home runs as he had five RBI.
The Panthers had runs in the fourth and eighth innings.
Hunter Beetley had an RBI single to right to drive in EIU's run in the fourth. Joe Duncan had an RBI double in the eighth. Duncan, Beetley and Parks all had two hits to lead EIU.
Dalton Westfall was in control on the mound for UTM working six innings to improve to 5-4 on the year.
