Clarksville, TN. – Eastern Illinois volleyball traveled to Tennessee to finish up this weekend's conference play against OVC opponent Austin Peay Saturday afternoon. The Panthers lost to the Governors losing a four-set match (25-16, 10-25, 29-31, and 18-25)
The first set would be all about runs, as a huge Panther 8-0 run ignited by an
Allie Hueston kill would give the Panthers a 20-13 lead. Once the Panthers were able to develop a cushioned lead, EIU didn't look back and was able to dominate the rest of the set beating the Governors 25-16.
Maria Brown and
Laurel Bailey led the Panthers in kills for the set totaling three kills apiece.
Austin Peay was able to claim the second and third sets from the Panthers hitting for their best average in the second set posting an average of .429. The second set included the Governors longest run of the match when they jumped out to a 10-0 run started by a kill from Ashley Slay.
The Panthers challenged the Governors in the third set forcing them into a win by two scenario. The set hit a high eleven tie scores, and four lead changes before the Governors were able to secure the set winning off of a Christina White kill to win 31-29.
The Governors were able to close out the match finishing on a 5-0 run led by a Kaylee Taff kill to defeat the Panthers 25-18. Leading the Governors for the match in kills was Christina White who totaled 18 kills with a .391 kill percentage. Kristen Stucker led in assists for Austin Peay totaling 53, and leading defensively was Allie O'Reilly who totaled 21 digs.
Leading the Panthers in kills for the match was Bailey who totaled 12 kills.
Maria Brown finished right behind her scoring ten kills and recorded 12 digs claiming her fifth double-double of the season.
Taylor Smith would claim another double-double to add to her collection this season totaling 17 assists and 14 digs.
Gina Furlin led the Panthers in assists recording a team-high 20. Leading defensively for the Panthers was
Anne Hughes who collected 24 digs, and Hueston who led in blocks with a team-high five.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday where they will host SIU Edwardsville for a conference showdown 6 p.m.
