Baseball Takes Series Opener at Memphis

Panthers display strong pitching to hold off Memphis Friday night.

The Eastern Illinois baseball team was able to secure first game of the series against Memphis Friday night winning 3-1.
 
With the win Eastern Illinois advances to .500 on the season with a record of 2-2, while Memphis drops to 2-3 on the season.
 
Eastern Illinois broke the scoring column early in the first inning.  Joe Duncan led off the first with a leadoff double to right center. Duncan would advance to third on a Jimmy Govern ground out. Logan Beaman continued his dominance at the plate for the Panthers singling through the right side to score Duncan.
 
Memphis would battle back evening the score on a Kyle Ouellette single up the middle in the bottom of the first.
 
The Panthers would extend their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Dougie Parks kicked things off with a one out double to center field. Hunter Morris would follow up hitting another double to left to score Parks.  Morris would advance to third on a Jack Holden fly-out. The Panthers would jump out to a 3-1 lead on a Jake Huber single up the middle scoring Morris.
 
Alex Stevenson was dominant in his second start on the hill this season tossing 7.1 innings, striking out three batters, allowing one run, and eight hits. Stevenson was able to pick up his first win of the season on the mound for the Panthers.
 
Michael Starcevich came in to relieve Stevenson in the bottom of the eighth. Starcevich picked up his first save of the season tossing 1.2 shutout innings. Starcevich struck out one and walked one batter.
 
Govern finished the evening 2-for-5 at the plate with a double. Morris went 1-for-4 with a run, hit, RBI, walk, and a double.  Beaman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
On the mound for the Panthers tomorrow afternoon against Memphis will be Carson Haws. Game two of the series will begin at 2 p.m.
