Eastern Illinois travels to SIUE on Thursday night as the Panthers will meet their Ohio Valley Conference travel partner for the first of two games this season. SIUE ends the regular season at EIU on Feb. 24. Eastern Illinois is 8-15 overall, 4-8 in the OVC after a 79-71 win over Tennessee Tech on Saturday. SIUE also has a 8-15 record, 4-8 in the OVC after the Cougars beat Jacksonville State on Saturday.
SMITH NAMED OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Mack Smith won his second Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week honor on Monday after helping lead the Panthers to a weekend split at home. On Saturday Smith set the EIU freshman single game scoring record with 31 points against Tennessee Tech going 12-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Smith averaged 22.5 points per game for the weekend. Smith has now scored in double figures in six straight games averaging 19.3 points per game over that span. He has knocked down multiple 3-pointers in nine straight games with three games of five or more 3-pointers. Smith has an active streak of 15 straight made free throws.
GOODWIN CRACKS EIU CAREER TOP TEN
Montell Goodwin scored 23 points during Saturday's win over Tennessee Tech as the senior has now scored 20 or more points five times this season and 11 times in his career. Goodwin was 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. In the game Goodwin moved into 10th on the EIU career 3-pointers list as he now has 121 for his career. He needs 22 more to catch Gerald Jones for ninth place. This season Goodwin has knocked down 53 3-pointers as he ranks sixth in the OVC in 3-pointers made. In addition Goodwin has moved into the top 15 in the OVC in both assists (14th at 2.8 per game) and steals (12th at 1.2 per game).
