Softball Falls to Furman, Shuts Out CSU

Haley Mitchell led the Panthers with five hits and four RBI on the day

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Haley Mitchell batted .714 with five hits and four RBI to lead Eastern Illinois softball in the final day at the Holy City Showdown. The Panthers fell 6-5 in extra innings to Furman, but rallied to shutout Charleston Southern 6-0 Sunday night. EIU improves to 16-7 on the season.

The Panthers fell 6-5 in nine innings to Furman in their first match-up of the day. Kayla Bear and Mitchell combined for four of EIU's seven hits in the game. Mitchell also recorded a team-best two RBI.

Furman scored five runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a three-run home run by Hannah Reynolds. The Paladins jumped out to a 5-0 lead over EIU. 

The Panthers scored one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to narrow Furman's lead to one run. Bear stepped up to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and hit her second homer of the season tying the game up at 5-5 and forcing extra innings.

Momentum stayed in Furman's favor as Cammy Pereira managed to steal home in the top of the ninth inning. The Paladins held EIU scoreless to walk away with a 6-5 win.

Michelle Rogers started on the mound for the Panthers, but split time with Valerie Thompson and Jessica Wireman. Rogers and Wireman each recorded five strikeouts while Thompson had two. Wireman took the loss for EIU.

In game two of the day, the Panthers recorded their sixth shutout over CSU with a 6-0 win. Mitchell led the Panthers in game two vs. CSU with three of EIU's nine hits. 

EIU set the pace in the first inning scoring their first run of the game. Bear crossed home plate off Mitchell's single up the middle. The Panthers scored two runs in the third and fifth innings highlighted by a homer by Mia Davis. Davis finished with a team-best three RBI. EIU tallied one more run in the sixth inning to go up 6-0 and win the game.

Wireman pitched a complete game recording eight strikeouts. She improved to 7-3 on the mound this season.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday Mar. 13 at Charleston Southern. First pitch is set for 2 pm.
