Baseball Completes Sweep at MVSU

EIU baseball completes sweep against Mississippi Valley State Wendesday afternoon.

The Eastern Illinois baseball team was able to secure the series sweep at Mississippi Valley State Wednesday afternoon. EIU defeated MVSU 11-6 to close the series.

With the win Eastern Illinois advances to 7-8 on the season, while Mississippi Valley State drops to 1-15 on the season.

EIU's offense was the difference maker in the series finale at MVSU this afternoon as they combined for a total 11 runs. The Panthers kicked off the game scoring in the top of the first on a Dougie Parks sacrifice fly.

Mississippi Valley State was able to answer back in the bottom of the first inning to even out the score. Willie Johnson got MVSU on the board scoring when he stole home on a Wendell Rieves strike out.

The Panthers would break the scoring column open in the top of the second adding five runs. Josh Turnock's one-out single sparked the Panther rally. Frankie Perrone would follow up drawing a walk. Andrew Curran would connect for a single to right field advancing Turnock and Perrone into scoring position. Joseph Duncan followed up with a one run single to left. MVSU would walk Jimmy Govern to load the bases for the Panthers. Eastern Illinois leader in RBIs Hunter Morris would clear the bases with a three run double to left to give the Panthers a 4-1 lead.

MVSU would add three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-4.

Eastern Illinois added to their lead in the top of the third adding three more runs. Matt Albert led off the top of the third with a walk. Albert would advance to third on a Turnock single down the left field line. Curran would get the Panthers on the board with a sacrifice bunt. Duncan followed up with an RBI triple. A Govern hit by pitch would give the Panthers runners at the corners with Morris up to bat. Morris would add another RBI on the day singling to first.

The Panthers would add two more runs in the top of the fifth and sixth inning. Morris would claim his fifth RBI on the day in the fifth, driving Duncan home on a sacrifice fly. Perrone also would get the Panthers on the board with a sacrifice fly in the sixth scoring Tesmond.

Will Klein earned his first win as a Panther tossing 1.2 innings, striking out three batters, allowing three hits, and four unearned runs.

Duncan went 3-for-3 on the afternoon with four runs, three stolen bases, two RBIs, triple, and a walk. Morris finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs, and a double. Turnock finished 3-for-5 with two runs.

Eastern Illinois returns home for their home-opener against OVC opponent Jacksonville State Friday afternoon (Mar. 16).
